The Lightness of Being by Frank Wilczek

I am currently reading a book by Frank Wilczek entitled The Lightness of Being. The Lightness of Being is a book that focuses on new radical scientific concepts such as mass, empty space, and energy. The book also puts into new perspective the composition and the nature of the universe as a whole and the revolution of fundamental physics. It is a very interesting book and I advise anyone who reads this post to look further into the book and/or into obtaining a copy of the book.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

I am a firm believer in the significant and axiomatic power of artificial intelligence. I envision artificial intelligence in a few years taking over almost every aspect of human life and human functioning. It could prove very helpful but also treacherous. Artificial intelligence can help with adjusting to the particular needs of the particular user it can and/or will provide the benefits and uses of more advanced and/or current technology. Please comment on this post and others.

Rush (band)

As a rock (music) fan I believe Rush is the quintessential and axiomatic band for intellectuals and for music fans who want to be musically and lyrically challenged. Rush combines unconventional time signatures and innovative lyrics to create a diverse and challenging catalog of music. Rush provides an intellectual edge to music and to rock music as a whole. Rush is a band that from my perspective represents and showcases everything that music should and can be. Comments are greatly appreciated.

The Superstring Theory/Nature

The Superstring Theory. A theory that attempts to explain the forces of nature in one setting and/or theory. From my perspective I believe that the Superstring Theory can become a reliable source in explaining the theoretical and the physics behind the forces of nature but not in solving the inquiries and inquisitions surrounding the precise origins and the full scale of nature. I also believe the Superstring Theory has the potential of becoming an accurate theory because the varying components of nature are expressed in strings and the varying strings create disparate vibrations which ensure and/or produce the different fundamental forces of nature. In conjunction with the personal views expressed about the Superstring Theory, in this post I also wanted to express my opinion about the essence and constituents of nature. Nature I affirm is a undefinable medium that expresses and/or showcases the actions of the human race. For example the melting of the icecaps is a mirror as to the actions humans are presenting such as too much emissions of greenhouse gases which is a result of industrialization and widespread and prolonged use of automobile use. I also think nature is something that is an oxymoron, it is too complex to explain yet contains the mere basics needed for survival of biotic organisms. I would greatly appreciate comments about either this post or this blog as a whole. Thank You Link to video on string theory: http://www.ted.com/talks/brian_greene_on_string_theory.html

Epistemology/Article

What exactly is knowledge? How is knowledge received? These questions and others like it are those asked in the branch of philosophy called epistemology. Epistemology is the branch if philosophy that deals with and focuses on the range and nature of knowledge. I believe that epistemology is one of the most important and prominent branches of philosophy. My reasoning behind the previous statement is as stated before epistemology deals with the nature and limits of knowledge. If the notion and nature of knowledge is grasped then a better appreciation and understanding of knowledge comes about. In the context of today's society knowledge is a very prominent and leading role in the function of the society that stands today, if the context of knowledge is grasped a huge part of the modern and advancing society is grasped. I want to close this post by providing a link to an article I found on Seed Magazine.com titled At the Edge of Perception by Greg Boustead. The article is about the work of an artist named Luke Jerram who challenges the brinks of both science and art. Link: http://seedmagazine.com/content/article/at_the_edge_of_perception/

Epidemics/The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

Yesterday I finished reading the book The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. In this post I would like to express the points the author made about epidemics and how they come about. One of the points expressed in the book about epidemics that I found interesting was the Law of the Few chapter. The Law of the Few chapter was based on people called connectors, mavens, and salesmen who aid in the starting points of epidemics. The role and/or premise of the connector is to know and relate many people other than personal friends. The role and/or premise of the maven is to have an expanded(ing) knowledge about things such as cars, deals, etc. The role and/or premise of the salesmen is to find innovators who create and/or start new trends that are not normally found in the mainstream world. Another point the author made in the book is in the chapter called,The Stickiness Factor. The Stickiness Factor chapter is based on how the stickiness of an idea is a component in an epidemic. The chapter used the example of the television show Blues Clues, and how the production of the show propelled its success. For example the show aired one episode 5 days a week which gave viewers the opportunity to make new assumptions and conlusions each time the show was viewed. If any errors are within this post please, please comment.

Comprimising Scientists

Are professions and/or fields of/in science being compromised for money? In a past post titled Scientists For Pay?, I provided a short summary on an article I found on Seed Magazine.com which addressed the rise of modern scientists that worked in the industry/for money. In this post I want to provide my own personal analysis on the notion/issue. In agreement with the article, more scientists are paid for their work and are starting to provide skills and knowledge for the industry. The pros of this rising notion is that it provides products and knowledge that can generate revenue for the businesses involved and income for scientists which also helps the economy. Another pro is products are created that better help the general public. Also it creates jobs for scientists and provides valuable workers for businesses. The cons of the rising notion is that the integrity of the scientist is almost tarnished. Also irrelevant and unimportant findings are concluded among scientists who work for the industry. The rise of capitalism can kind of come into play because of the increasing revenues coming in to huge companies and/or businesses. Feel free to comment on errors made in this post or on the topic at hand. Link to post:http://theintellectblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/scientist-for-pay.html

Moral Relativism and Moral Objectivism

In the two contrasting elements of human morality, my belief leans more toward moral objectivism. My belief also spans to moral universalism and meta-ethical relativism. In my opinion, morality is a universal concept that includes some or most universal moral concepts but has exceptions due to certain traditions, cultures, etc. of a certain group of people and/or people. Please comment on any errors made in this post or what you stance is on the topic on moral relativism and moral objectivism.

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology. What exactly is it? From the book Nanotechnology for Dummies by Richard Booker and Earl Boysen and my research, nanotechnology is defined as an "interdisciplinary field" that deals with the control of subject matter on a molecular and/or atomic level. The field of nanotechnology is also a field that changes and brings opportunities to different aspects of human life. Examples include advances in the areas of security, health care, technology, and many other fields and/or aspects. Nanotechnology helps to effectively pinpoint tumor(s) in a cancer patient and heat the tumor(s) until it is eliminated. Nanotechnology also helps to create security devices that are sufficient but in small and compact sizes which creates easier and faster transportation. Although nanotechnology is an advanced/advancing field of study, the major implications of nanotechnology will set in within years and/or decades of research.

Metaphysics and Mathematics

Although it is known that metaphysics and science go hand in hand in the field of natural science, I believe that metaphysics and mathematics are also relative to each other. I got the idea from reading a book about different scientists that made contributions to different aspects of science and/or the world. From reading a section of the book, I gained a new perspective on the surrounding relationships between metaphysics and other areas of study/intellect. My explanation on the relationship between metaphysics and mathematics is metaphysics and mathematics both focus on the nature and function of logical reasoning and the basis of functions but the difference is mathematics deals with that concept but only pertaining to numbers and the operations that entail those numbers. Metaphysics applies the concept to find the nature of the world and the nature of being. If I am completely off base with this explanation or if I need to elaborate the explanation please notify me with comments, it would be greatly appreciated. Also please comment on your idea of metaphysics or the relations between different fields that it entails.

Mission

The purpose of this post is to lay out and explain my mission and/or purpose for creating this blog. My purpose for creating this blog was to help propel my mission of spreading knowledge and intellect to the world in an unorthodox manner. I feel that this is why I am here on this earth which is to spread knowledge/intellect. I believe that anyone can spread knowledge with any amount of knowledge they have. I have also created this blog because I wanted to create an outlet in which I could bring out intellectual ideas and (hopefully) create one of the many epicenters of intellectual gathering and thought. I have not clearly defined my purpose for creating this blog and that is why I feel the need to address it in this post.

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell is a book that goes in depth about human thinking and some of its processes. I think it is a very well written book that showcases the mere processing and nature of human thinking and/or thinking in general. The book also uses scenarios and/or real-life examples that help to get the point at hand across. I think this is an excellent book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in psychology or in the mere nature and/or processes of thinking.

Agriculture

As everyone is aware of, the agriculture of today is way more complex and advanced than the agriculture in the distant past. Through this widely known fact, negative and positive connotations are associated with the state/presence of today's agriculture in comparison to the past form of agriculture. In my own assumption I believe that modern agriculture has more cons than pros. The pros of modern agriculture are it is able to mass produce crops and products in a short amount of time, less pesticide use, and it brings a somewhat efficient standard to agriculture. The cons of modern agriculture are more farmers are put out of work, use of unsanitary and unhealthy practices to grow huge animals in a short amount of time, morals in agriculture are substituted with money, and many other cons.

What Is Success?

The reason why I chose to write/type a post about the meaning of success is because I hear many differing definitions on what is success. For example some people think success deals with material things such as houses, cars, clothes, etc. In my opinion success is the obtainment of one's goals whether small or big. I also believe that material things come along with success or are the benefits of success but are not the real definition of success.

The Power of Effective Writing

The power of effective writing is in itself a powerful force along with knowledge and intellect. Effective writing is simply an effective way of conveying powerful and worthwhile ideas and information. For example my reasons/intentions for creating this blog is to convey (hopefully) effective intellectual ideas/writing that can help spread knowledge/intellect to the world. Effective writing can bring about needed/wanted, fundamental, negative, and positive change. It can also persuade and/or change the views of others.

Ideas?

In this post I am asking if anyone has an idea of an intellectual topic that they would like me to discuss please place an idea in the comment section. I would greatly appreciate it.

Vanishing Cultures

I have previously read part of an article on Seed Magazine's website called In Defense of Difference by Maywa Montenegro and Terry Glavin. The subject matter of the article is about how scientists are trying to protect the world's vanishing languages, cultures, and species. The article points out that the loss of cultures, languages, etc. makes the landscape more "monochromatic, homogenous and monocultural." It also points out that when a language or culture is lost, less knowledge is within/built within the world. It brings the point that when species vanish more than just genetic resources are lost but crucial links in a complicated ecological web. Creatures or Living Organisms?

In the presence of this day I read an article on Seed Magazine.com called The Body Politic by Courtney Humphries which asks the question of whether humans are "organisms or living ecosystems" because of "the deep symbiosis between bacteria and their human hosts." The article goes on to explain the question and find the answer in depth. In my opinion humans are both living ecosystems and organisms. The explanation for my thinking is that humans are living ecosystems because they/we host immense and multiplying organisms that form ecosystems of their own that are beneficial to needs of/as an organism. The Importance/Concept of Thought/Thinking

It is a universal concept and/or fact that thinking is a crucial and significant element in human functioning. Without thought and the brain that facilitates thought, normal human functioning and survival would be non-existent/impossible or minimal. Thinking in my opinion can be defined as an art that carries with a complex process that involves thinking to actually think, to get to the core of what the thought is about and where it stems from. In my opinion thinking is as important as the basic needs in life(food, water ,etc.), thinking is required to figure out how to get the basic needs needed for survival. Thought is a fundamental, complex, and rigorous activity that most humans engage in daily. Although thinking is ignored and taken for granted, it represents an important part of being. If abnormal and/or unhealthy thinking is present it creates an abnormal atmosphere or sense of being.

Psychology

Psychology. What exactly is psychology? My personal definition of psychology is a science in which it focuses on the behavior and reasons behind various behaviors of human beings. Currently, I am reading the book Psychology For Dummies by Adam Cash. One of the interesting points or sections that I read in the book was the section that simplified the metatheories concerning psychology and or human behavior. The simplification of the metathories is called The Biopsychosocial Model. The main function and/or point of the model is to show that" human behavior and mental processes are the products of biological, psychological, and social influences and how these influences interact." The book also states that if any of these three components are missing in an explanation of human behavior and mental processess then the explantion is incomplete. The book explains the role of the body, mind, people, and culture. The role of the body accepts the fact of the human exsistence. The role of the mind is the central placehold for thoughts, feelings, etc. and is "central to understanding human behavior and mental processes." The role of people is people can influence or "shape" the human mind and mental processing.

Scientist For Pay?

Minutes before I wrote this post I read an article on Seed Magazine.com called The State of the Scientist by Steven Shapin. The topic of the article is about the modern image and/or state of the modern scientist. One of the facets of the image of a modern scientist is a scientist that works in the industry for pay. Before the 21st century, many scientists did not work for pay but as a self-financed researcher or scientist. In the case of modern scientists, more scientists work for pay or in the industry. The article also introduced the trend of scientists working for pay and how skeptics see it as sacrificing integrity. In my opinion the trend of scientists for pay is a good and a bad thing. In one respect it can help to create more effective products that significantly help society, on the other hand in a way it does kind of sacrifice the integrity of the scientist in general and also irrelevant findings and/or research is/are funded and wasted and is not put towards significant research and/or findings. Feel free to comment. Link to Article:http://seedmagazine.com/content/article/the_state_of_the_scientist/

What Is Good?

I have previously read the book Philosophy For Dummies by Tom Morris in which I came across the philosophical principle and/or question of what is good. The book stated that a definition is known of what is a good book or a good movie but not of what good is or the nature of good. My definition of good is something that has a purpose and its use concerns that purpose. I also thing good something or someone that is pleasing to all five senses. I think the definition of good can vary depending on a person's experience, environment, perspectives/principles, nature, and ways of thinking. After reading this post of a definition of good comes to mind, comment.

Malcolm X

Yesterday I finished reading the autobiography of Malcolm X as told to and recorded by Alex Haley. During the course of reading the book several changes, inclinations, and ideologies occurred in the life of Malcolm X as presented in the autobiography. For instance, in the middle of the autobiography, Malcolm X is a follower of The Nation of Islam and/or Elijah Muhammad but towards the closing Malcolm X converts to true Islam and also changes the direction of his perceptions and thoughts on racism. As a leader, Malcolm X was more aggressive and direct than many of his fellow leaders. In the autobiography he even mentions the differences between other leaders and himself. The beginning/middle section of the book told the street life of Malcolm X and how in jail is when he turned his life around and became fully aware of the prejudices brought upon the black race and also converted to the "Nation Of Islam" and submitted to the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. I thought in reading the book that Malcolm X presented very interesting points for example while conversing he came to the conclusion that the white race is not inherently racist, but that society imposes and/or influences racist thoughts/actions on the white race. At the beginning of his activism, he believed that all of the white race were racist and he also presented an image of violence opposed to the image of non-violence presented in the Civil Rights Movement. Malcolm X's pilgrimage/trip to Mecca changed his views in terms of it helped him to understand that not all humans of the white race are racist, seeing the hospitality and love between the white race he put a new approach behind his views one of a less aggressive nature. Towards the end of the book, Malcolm X repeatedly mentions the fact of he knew he was going to die, even in his past hustling days. The autobiography is very interesting especially in the middle and ending sections of the book.

Modern Science

Modern Science. The topic of many discussions concerning the current state of society. Modern science in my opinion is a very influential and present force concerning today's society. New advances and discoveries that forever change the function of the world as a whole, the admiration and fear of the general public, and the scrutiny of skeptics are common actions that concern modern science. These forces and others are part of what make modern science a prominent aspect of today's society. In this respect, I am glad that modern science gets the attention it gets because it can help promote science and open up more occupation to more willing applicants.

Scientific Progress

Scientific progress. The two words that assess the current state of science today. In the last few decades and/or century science has progressed from menial findings to findings that change the lives of humanity. As the previous statement is already known, the book Denialism:How Irrational Thinking Hinders Scientific Progress, Harms the Planet, and Threatens Our Lives by Michael Specter analyzes the fear and mistrust put towards science and how that hinders scientific progress. Although I have not read the book, I believe the statement assess the current state of science today. The fear and skepticism towards science and many of its findings hinders the abillity of science to progress and improve the lives of humanity/society today. I belive science to be interesting and the mainstay in today's society. I believe any new finding in science to be amazing, spectacular, and one step towards a better world.

GM Crops/Food

In the fairly recent debate over GM crops/food my stance remains for GM crops/food. The reason for/behind my stance on the issue is because I believe that although food is genetically modified, it is genetically modified for the best. Food and/or crops that are genetically modified are modified for the purposes of to create a crop that can withstand environmental damage and other forms of damage as well to create a easier, healthier, and safer eating experience. In my opinion the creation of GM foods/crops can help and not harm the human eating experience. The existence of GM crops also helps to create accessibility among common foods/crops. Please comment.

Is Population Or Consumption the Culprit In the Current Environmental Crises?

http://seedmagazine.com/content/article/is_population_a_problem/

Self-Reporting Research

Yesterday, I read an article at the Seed magazine website by Dave Munger that questioned the scientific research method of surveying people and having a scientific result from the study/surveying. The article explains that during the survey, humans are prone to different psychological and mental aspects that could effect the answers that come about. The article also includes the point of what if self-reporting is the only option and "is better than nothing." More information is included on the new point made in the article. The article then closes with the notion that scientists "need to know the limitations of self-reporting as they conduct their research." Ideas,Intellect, and Knowledge: Analysis

This post is a personal and opinionated analysis of the questions posed in the previous, corresponding post. In terms of the fact that ideas, intellect, and knowledge are three of the driving forces of the world, I do not believe that this assessment is portrayed in a positive light, instead it is being pushed aside for the attention to be placed on rather unseemly and insignificant things. I believe that to some extent these three forces are used in a positive and partially full potential. I also do no believe that these forces are being used in its full entirety. To put ideas, intellect, and knowledge in a more positive light and not just in times of crisis, but all around is to create a better or more positive view towards these forces and make these forces more enjoyable and accessible to a number of people. This analysis is opinionated and may contain many errors in the eyes of others.

Ideas, Intellect, and Knowledge

Ideas, intellect, and knowledge. Three of the many driving forces behind the production, mechanization, and flow of the world. Although the previous statement is widely known, the following question that I pose is a question that questions the full use of those three forces and the type of portrayal that surrounds these three forces. Although it is known that ideas, intellect, and knowledge are important aspects and are driving forces behind society, is this fact being put to positive and full use? Are ideas, intellect, and knowledge put in a positive or are still put in a negative light? If this fact is put in a negative light, what can be done about it? These are the questions that I pose in this post. The answers may be evident or complex.

Church or State?

As I proceeded with my reading of The Brothers Karamazov, the topic of church and state was discussed between the characters of the book. The allotted discussion interested me and propelled me to the thought of whether church and state should be separated. I wondered if church and state were never separated then would today's society have less or more problems? I wondered if society would be better off with church and state separated or without church and state separated?
My stance on the topic is still undecided. Please leave comments on your opinion of whether or not church and state should be separated.

The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky

The book The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky caught my attention because as I was reading the synopsis it mentioned three brothers, one who is intellectual, one who is sensual, and another who is idealistic. The synopsis goes on to mention how the three brothers' personalities come together/collide in the death of their father. The book also includes the author's inner most thoughts on topics such as religion, good, evil, and other topics. I thought it interesting how the book includes how the different moral principles of the brothers would come together or collide in the death of their father. I am in the current process of reading the book and in my opinion looking from the outside in, it provides a good glimpse into the time setting of which this book was written.

Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit by Al Gore

The book Earth in the Balance by Al Gore captured my attention on how it was able to relate the human spirit to the environment and how those two principles interact and impact each other. The book assesses the human spirit and broader aspects of all/most environmental concerns. Although the book was first written/published in 1992, it provides excellent points and broad information which can be applied to the environmental concerns humanity faces today. I recommend that anyone who reads this post and is concerned about the environment read this book.

Knowledge/Intellect In Nature

The relationship between nature and humans in today's society is incompatible and out of touch. As a result of this drifted relationship, environmental problems occur because of the strain and heavy load put on it by human beings but also because of the knowledge not obtained about the inner balance and workings of nature and of the relationship between humans and nature. If knowledge about the balance and inner workings of nature were known and applied then the many environmental problems could be solved. If the relationship between nature and humans was to be restored than the inner knowledge about the inner workings of nature could be obtained to find the answers to many of the environmental crises facing humanity today. Many discoveries involving environmental crises are effective in solving it today but in my opinion only look at the outer workings of nature and not the impact and imbalance between humans and nature. This post is only an opinionated outlook on how knowledge and/or intellect impacts/helps nature.

Comments

Please post comments either on intellectual terms or the subjects and/or errors that are enclosed in posts. I ask that no obscene or inappropriate comments be made.
The reason why I posted this video was because I believe in the views that Thom Yorke presents in this video.

Intellect/Knowledge In General

Through the common action of reading, the know-how from experience, the learning from mistakes and/or teaching, and the mere actions of inquisition, the prominent and vital force of intellect and/or knowledge comes about. These prominent forces are forces that create a new portal into a world of opportunities and answers to many inquiries and unknowns. In the pretext of/for today's society knowledge is a vital element to the inner workings that help balance and keep the outer workings of society in order. Knowledge is also a kind of quest that can help seek out unknowns and answers that cannot be obtained from everyday sources or self-inquiries. The basic message of this post is that knowledge is many things diverse, intriguing, simple, complex, but most of all important in today's society and in other contexts.
