Public Fear Towards Science

Of the few barriers that science contains the one that is probably the most debilitating is the public's generalized fear and perceptions towards science. As an individual who is heavily interested and enthralled in the sciences, I fail to understand the public's disdain and opposition towards science and other intellectual entities. In my opinion science is one of the intellectual entities that provides a wealth of information on the inner and outer workings of nature, space, and several naturally occurring groups and their corresponding constituents. I think the reason for the public's disdain towards science occurs because of the many societal conflicts and the changing and progressing landscapes of science and its correlating disciplines.

  1. Responder here.

Is the public not justified in their fear? History is replete with episodes of science being misused by governments and corporations to advance their own gains at the expense of the citizenry. Cases in point - The Tuskegee Experiments, the drug Thalidomide, and LSD to name just a few.

  2. Good point but as a firm believer in the power of science, I fail to understand why the public can't get past ignorance and look at the science that actually makes a difference and is not used for monetary gain. Science explains nature's dynamics and how those interactions respond and correlate with each other. I fail to see the fear and harm in that.

  3. As a sidenote, I belive the public is not getting the full and acurate picture of what science is and what it does. I belive science is not portrayed to the public in the best ways possible.
